If travelling through the Comox Valley by chance or with purpose, stop in at the Avenue Bistro for lunch or dinner. I have been there just once before, but have been impressed each time. Very pleasant atmosphere, modern decor without being pretentious or uncomfortable, great service, and very good food.
Tonight was a client dinner and no one seemed to be all that hungry. So a smattering of appies and wine it was.
The Oysters were fresh and succulent, splash of lemon and down the hatch. The prawn tempura was excellent..not too much batter, but light and delicate with a beautiful fusion slaw on the side, the beef carpaccio was flavourful and accented beautifully with little cornichons, capers and aioli....it may have been a little on the thicker side which my dining companions commented..but I enjoyed it very much.
They also dove into the artichoke, crab and spinach dip with fry bread....I am still avoiding dairy so I didn't try it..but it looked amazing...and must have been because the guys devoured it. I did try a small piece of the fry bread and WOW...never tasted anything quite like it..and it probably clogged an artery..but man...good stuff.
There are a few really good restaurants in the comox valley, which you may not expect, but being so close to the water...the sea food is bound to be fresh and abundant, and there are so many local artisans making cheese, breads and growing veggies...you really can't go wrong.
A retirees heaven, and a nice little escape, the Comox Valley is certainly a little hidden treasure you will Enjoy!
